Review highlights
Based on 399 reviewsOld Dragon Restaurant in Semenyih is widely praised for its flavorful and reasonably priced dishes, particularly its signature Sandy Fish and weekend-exclusive curry pork ribs. Customers appreciate the prompt and courteous service in a comfortable, air-conditioned setting with ample parking. The restaurant is known for its efficient food preparation, though wait times can extend during peak hours due to its popularity. The menu highlights include herb-infused braised chicken, crispy fried tilapia with unique milk granules, and various local favorites like Hokkien Mee. Overall, it is regarded as a hidden gem offering authentic, well-executed Malaysian cuisine that pairs well with casual gatherings and relaxed dining experiences.
Unassuming restaurant serving superb food at reasonable prices. Located off Jln Semenyih ( southbound turn left just after Petronas station ) behind some shops, with plenty of parking. Service was prompt and courteous. We had their curry pork ribs ( only available weekends ), signature deep fried fish with special sauce, chit kwa taufu and kailan. All tasted fantastic especially the pork and fish. Will definitely come again to try the other dishes.
air conditioned restaurant, can be packed during lunch time. food came out fast once ordered. there was a complimentary soup before the food came. some of their food were very nice. "braised chicken with herbs" was great, full of herbs with tender chicken meat. highly recommended. their "specially fried ikan talapia" (fried tilapia with crispy milk granules / Nai sha) was great too. highly recommended as well. other dishes were ok to above average. overall 4.5⭐ p/s: there is a "gangnam style sotong" in their menu, didn't order that to try.
Their signature dish is the Lai Sar Yee or “Sandy” Fish. It’s a whole tilapia fish filleted and sliced then deep fried. The sandy grains are made with a mixture of butter and milk stir fried until the milk solids become granules. It’s quite tasty eaten with the crispy fried fish slices. The fish is served with a heaping of lightly vinegared slivers of cucumber, onions and Birds Eye chillies. They were not the inventors of the dish though. That honour belongs to another restaurant in Semenyih which has now declined in popularity. The originators had a more piquant and pickled taste to their cucumber and onion topping which I preferred. So the version here does not quite live up to the original standard but it pretty decent on an overall basis. Their Hokkien Mee/Bihun here is also pretty good and popular with regulars. Stick with yellow noodles as the bihun tends to absorb the gravy and lard and makes the dish somewhat dry. Other good bets here are Deep Fried Pork Ribs; Salted Egg Yolk Squid; Lemon Chicken and Kam Heong La La. Overall it’s a pretty good restaurant with consistent food at reasonable prices. The decor is basic and it can get pretty noisy at peak hours.
Came for lunch, not so busy. Locals tell me when it's busy it can be over an hour wait for the food. Honestly, for food this good and chatting with a group of friends, I wouldn't mind waiting an hour! Every single dish was exactly the way I would want it! Hands down, hidden gem in the middle of nowhere!
Love the hokkien Mee and also nai sa Yu literally translated to Sandy Fish, a Signature dish we can get in Semenyih. Goes really well with beer.
Our 1st visit here. The food was superb. Will return to try other dishes next round. Service was alright.
